Selling Schweinfurt : Targeting Assessment and Marketing in the Air Campaign Against German Industry
A common theme of airpower histories is that the Combined Bomber Offensive was the proving ground for a post-war independent air force.Whether or not the United States Strategic Air Forces (USAAF) could perform to the hype of its interwar doctrine, Allied commanders based their rival approaches to victory in Europe on their differing views of independent airpower. However, there is an essential, yet overlooked facet to this story: commanders' convictions alone could not hold sway within the War Department, much less at the politically and bureaucratically charged meetings of the Combined Chiefs of Staff. The air commanders pressed their staffs for decision-quality assessments and photographic evidence to sell their arguments and project their progress. They needed informed targeting plans and objective post-raid reports as well as an air-intelligence enterprise to mature all-too-quickly out of interwar neglect. What they received--and Brian Vlaun explains--was a collision of organizational interests and leadership personalities that shaped Ira Eaker's command of the Eighth Air Force in 1943, the tumultuous air campaign over Germany, and the path of the post-war U.S.Air Force. As a result of the author's research through thousands of declassified files, Selling Schweinfurt examines the relationships between air-intelligence organizations and key decision-makers.His analysis spans from pre-war planning and doctrine development, through the Eighth Air Force's independent air campaign, and culminates with the formation of the United States Strategic Air Forces and its 1944 pre-invasion preparations. This book concludes that military organizations, if left unchecked, may adopt symbols and exaggerate claims to justify their own preferences and market their ideas in ways that mask their optimistic assumptions. In the case of the air campaign against Germany, both the four-engine bomber and specialized targets--like Schweinfurt's ball bearings--served as symbols and powerful marketing tools for the AAF and air intelligence, respectively.

A marketing campaign for the tiger slug could focus on highlighting its unique and striking appearance, emphasizing its role in the ecosystem as a natural pest controller, and promoting its low-maintenance care as a pet. Salamanca Campaign 1812
After a gap of two years, the 1812 Salamanca Campaign saw Wellington taking the offensive in Spain against Marshal Marmont's Army of Portugal.Marching from the border fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo which fell to the Allies in January, neither commander was willing to take the risk of a general action without a clear tactical advantage. The result were stand-offs as Wellington offered battle on the San Christobal Heights, but once the small French-garrisoned forts left behind in Salamanca fell, Marmont withdrew to the Douro. For over a week the two armies shared cooling waters of the river before Marmont humbugged' Wellington and fell on the Allied left flank at Castrejon.Wellington rushed to the aid of the Light and 4th divisions with the heavy cavalry.Over the following days Marmont dexterously manoeuvred Wellington back towards Salamanca, with both armies within cannon shot still not risking battle. When it seemed Wellington would have to march back to the safety of Portugal, Marmont finally made a mistake on the plains south of Salamanca on 22 July 1812, by allowing his army to become over extended.Wellington saw what was happening and after weeks of marching and counter marching, the battle the soldiers earnestly hoped for was on. In the past it has been difficult to place the fighting on the ground in the centre of the Salamanca battlefield, where vast clouds of smoke and dust that rolled along the basin' obscured vision even for those fighting.Supplementing their letters, diaries and memoires with modern geographical aids, archaeology and a stout pair of boots, it is now possible to reconcile the sequence of the battle with locations, in a way in which it was not feasible even a few years ago.

The Sicily Campaign
The Allied effort to secure the Italian island of Sicily followed hard on the heels of the North African Campaign, when an Anglo-American force had finally hemmed the Axis forces into Tunisia, where they were obliged to surrender on 13 May 1943, with over a quarter of a million German and Italian troops going into captivity. Now, intending to open the sea lanes across the Mediterranean for the first time since 1940, to dilute German strength in the theatre and knock Italy out of the war, the Allies invaded Sicily on the night of 9-10 July 1943. After just eight weeks planning and preparation, sea and airborne landings were made on the southern and south-eastern faces of the island. The campaign that followed included a further British airborne landing in mid-July before Axis forces were obliged to withdraw across the Straits of Messina to the Italian mainland, leaving Sicily in Allied hands. The six weeks of fighting cost the Allied forces almost 20,000 men killed, wounded and missing, while their opponents lost around 100,000 men killed, wounded and missing, with a further 123,000 prisoners, mostly Italian. The Sicily campaign was the first occasion that Allied forces successfully took the fight onto the home territory of an Axis power, and it provided the springboard for the Allied return to continental Europe for the first time since Dunkirk via the invasion of Italy proper at the beginning of September 1943. And it marked the beginning of formal Anglo-US co-operation that was to be a key feature in the success of the subsequent campaign in North-West Europe: British land forces in Sicily served under US General Dwight D.Eisenhower, with senior commanders including Montgomery and Patton, who subsequently occupied the same role in North-West Europe and Germany's final defeat.

Yes, the Polish Campaign was considered a blitzkrieg. The German military employed rapid and coordinated attacks using tanks, aircraft, and infantry to quickly overwhelm Polish defenses.
